Finding the Little Prince: How to Spend the Perfect Day at Gamcheon Culture Village

Gamcheon Culture Village, often called the Santorini of Korea or the Machu Picchu of Busan, is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Busan. Once a refugee settlement and a slum during the war, it has been transformed by local artists into a vibrant cultural hub. The colorful houses are stacked like blocks along the steep foothills, and with various creative murals and art installations, this historic neighborhood has been given a new lease on life!

Gamcheon Culture Village is located in the Saha District of Busan. Its unique terraced landscape and artistic atmosphere have made it an unmissable cultural landmark. Originally a refuge for displaced people during the Korean War, the community has evolved through various art revitalization projects. Today, it stands as a unique site that seamlessly blends history with modern art. Most of the attractions are free to visit, making it a highly recommended stop on your itinerary!

Top Attractions in Gamcheon Culture Village

Here are several must-visit spots within Gamcheon Culture Village. You can click on the addresses to open them directly in Google Maps. I recommend heading to the Tourist Information Center near the entrance shortly after you arrive to pick up a map and get the latest local information.

The Little Prince and the Desert Fox

The Little Prince and the Desert Fox at Gamcheon Culture Village

This is undoubtedly the most popular photo spot in Gamcheon Culture Village. The Little Prince and the Desert Fox sit on a railing, quietly gazing over the colorful village. The queue to take a photo here is usually quite long. The classic pose is to sit on the railing next to the Little Prince and enjoy the view together.

Stairway to Wishes (Book Stairs)

Painted Book Stairs

Hidden between the shops, these rainbow-colored stairs are designed to look like the spines of giant books. You can spot elements from classics like “Harry Potter” on the steps. Nearby, a mural of Charlie Chaplin adds to the artistic vibe, making it an excellent spot for photography.

Fish Swimming Through the Alley

Near the entrance of Gamcheon Culture Village, you will find a mural spanning several meters made up of many colorful wooden fish that form a large “school.” These vibrant fish seem to swim freely along the paths used daily by villagers. They are more than just decoration; they symbolize freedom and hope. Since this is a high-traffic area, you may need some patience to get a clear shot.

Haneulmaru Observatory

This is arguably the best vantage point for a panoramic view of Gamcheon Culture Village. It is located not far from the Tourist Information Center, though it requires climbing a narrow set of stairs. From the observatory, you can see the entire village of colorful houses and even catch a glimpse of the sea in the distance. The platform features green artificial turf and white railings, making it perfect for taking beautiful photos.

Lighthouse Mural

Lighthouse Mural

The Lighthouse Mural is located right next to the Little Prince statue. It uses trompe l’oeil (optical illusion) techniques to create a 3D effect. From inside the “lighthouse,” you can see through a window looking out over the colorful landscape of the village. A recommended way to take a photo is to sit by the middle window to create an image that blends seamlessly with the village background.

Experiences in Gamcheon Culture Village

Beyond visiting the sights, if you are looking for a unique Korean experience, I highly recommend purchasing the Visit Busan Pass before you come. The pass includes two specific experiences at Gamcheon Culture Village: Hanbok Rental & Flipbook Studio. One Visit Busan Pass allows for one free Hanbok rental and two free flipbooks.

The flipbook experience is in partnership with flipbookstudio. Essentially, the staff will record about 8 seconds of video, which is then converted into a series of static photos and bound into a small book. When you flip the pages quickly, it looks like a lifelike animation. The recording process takes only about 5 minutes (and if it’s not busy, they might give you a few retries). Since the book takes about an hour to produce, I suggest doing this as your first stop in Gamcheon Culture Village and picking up the finished books after you finish exploring.

Food and Dining in Gamcheon Culture Village

Cafe in Gamcheon Culture Village

There are many restaurants and cafes in Gamcheon Culture Village, as well as various Korean street snacks like sweet pancakes (hotteok) and fish cakes (eomuk). Here are two recommended cafes where you can overlook the beautiful village scenery!

From ; Choi

This cafe is located just up the Book Stairs. It is a bit hidden, so keep an eye out for it, but the upside is that it is usually not very crowded. The cafe has both indoor and outdoor areas. While the interior is not large, the best seats are by the windows. The clean white walls paired with the expansive view through the large windows make every shot look like a painting!

Coffee IT House

This is a popular cafe located near the entrance of Gamcheon Culture Village, easily recognizable by its striking pink exterior. It is quite famous on social media platforms like Instagram. The shop offers an excellent vantage point overlooking the entire village and the harbor. The building has multiple levels: the first floor and B1 are the cafe areas, the second floor is a Hanbok experience center, and the rooftop offers outdoor seating.

Gamcheon Culture Village Day Trip Itinerary

A full tour of Gamcheon, including slow walking, taking photos, and having coffee, takes about three hours. It is recommended to combine this with nearby attractions such as Songdo or Huinnyeoul Culture Village. Ending the day at a Busan jjimjilbang makes for a perfect one-day journey.
