Coffee, Curry, and Cool Vibes: Your Shimokitazawa Day Tour Itinerary

Shimokitazawa is widely considered a mecca for Tokyo’s youth today. With its endless rows of vintage shops, unique cafes, independent bookstores, art galleries, and bars, the area is bursting with energy. Whether you are a culture seeker or looking for a romantic date spot, this neighborhood has it all.

Below is a guide covering transportation, must-visit attractions, and essential eats. Although it is located a bit further from the typical tourist hubs, if you are looking for a unique itinerary, you should definitely include a Shimokitazawa day tour in your next Tokyo free-and-easy trip!

Shimokitazawa day tour

Shimokitazawa Transportation

Take the train to Shimokitazawa Station. It is currently served by the Odakyu Line and the Keio Inokashira Line. You can start exploring the shopping streets immediately upon exiting the station.

Shimokitazawa Food

Yazawa Shimokitazawa

This is a highly famous Yakiniku (BBQ) restaurant in the Shimokitazawa area. The interior has a retro and atmospheric feel. Some staff members speak Chinese, and they provide English menus, so ordering is not an issue. Most notably, the Mandopop king Jay Chou has even dined here! The quality of the meat ranges from affordable cuts to A5 grade Wagyu. They offer set menus as well as à la carte options, allowing you to choose based on your budget and preferences.

Reservation: If you don’t speak Japanese, you can book a table through this website.

Ogawa Coffee Laboratory Shimokitazawa

Located in the reload shopping complex, this Kyoto-based cafe features a minimalist raw concrete design. Besides being aesthetically pleasing, the coffee is exceptional. They offer over 20 types of beans, and the staff will kindly introduce them even if you aren’t familiar with coffee. It’s a perfect spot for a Shimokitazawa day tour break to enjoy a cup of coffee and a light snack.

Rojiura Curry SAMURAI

This restaurant is famous for its Hokkaido-style soup curry. The flavor profile is slightly sweet and comes with a vast variety of vegetables, making it a healthy and satisfying meal that won’t leave you feeling heavy. The interior is quite small, so expect a queue during peak dining hours. It is recommended to visit during off-peak times.

Village Vanguard Diner Shimokitazawa

This burger joint has been selected as one of Tabelog’s Top 100 Restaurants. It features a traditional American style with affordable prices and large portions. The burgers are incredibly juicy, and the toppings—such as avocado and wasabi—perfectly balance classic Western flavors with Japanese culinary elements. If you have a sweet tooth, the pancakes are also highly recommended and widely praised.

Shimokitazawa Attractions

Toyo Department Store

Toyo Department Store currently has two locations in Shimokitazawa: the Main Building and the Annex, both within a 5-minute walk from the station. It houses around 22 different stalls selling various second-hand clothing and accessories. Beyond hunting for vintage treasures, the retro decorations and murals make it a great spot for photography.

Antique Life Jin

Antique Life Jin is a lifestyle boutique selling a mix of new and vintage household items. The most eye-catching items are the cute animal-themed ornaments, which are incredibly healing to look at on a desk. These charming small items make perfect souvenirs! However, the shop space is quite narrow, so be careful not to bump into things while browsing.

Mikan Shimokita

The word “Mikan” in Japanese means “incomplete,” representing how Shimokitazawa is always evolving and changing, never truly reaching a final state. Mikan Shimokita is located right under the elevated tracks next to the station. This five-story space includes restaurants, vintage shops, cafes, and workspaces. You can wander around according to your interests and easily spend an entire afternoon here.

TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE Shimokitazawa

The Shimokitazawa branch of TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE is located within the Mikan Shimokita complex mentioned above. The spacious and comfortable environment is great for reading, and this branch also features a “SHARE LOUNGE.” This is a dedicated workspace provided with various snacks, drinks, and even alcoholic beverages. You can purchase the hours you need, making it an ideal spot for remote workers or freelancers during their Shimokitazawa day tour.

Bonus Track

This is a newly developed area. Although not large, it consists of various container-style buildings nestled together, featuring bars, restaurants, cafes, and small shops. The area is beautifully lit up at night, though most shops close by 8:00 PM, so it is best to visit in the afternoon.

reload

This is one of my personal favorite spots for a Shimokitazawa day tour. The area spans about 1,700 meters across two floors. The uniform white aesthetic gives the entire district a hip, artistic vibe. It is home to various trendy brands, cafes, art galleries, and restaurants. Each shop is worth exploring not just for its products, but for its unique interior design.

New York Joe Shimokitazawa

Shimokitazawa is packed with vintage stores, but New York Joe Shimokitazawa stands out because it is converted from an old public bathhouse. Beyond its unique environment, the space is quite broad with plenty of treasures to discover. However, as it is a second-hand shop, the quality of some clothes may vary—make sure to check them carefully before buying!
