Living as a Digital Nomad in Osaka: A 1-Month Survival & Lifestyle Guide

Osaka is one of the most popular travel destinations in Japan. Its proximity to other Kansai cities like Kyoto and Nara makes it an ideal base for exploration. In this article, I will share my insights from spending a month as a digital nomad in Osaka. Beyond food and sightseeing recommendations, I’ll also suggest work-friendly cafes and co-working spaces. If you are considering the digital nomad Osaka lifestyle, this guide is for you!

Osaka Digital Nomad Recommendation Index: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 stars)
⭕️ Pros – Incredible food scene / Numerous co-working spaces / Excellent transportation / Lower cost of living compared to other major Japanese cities
❌ Cons – Fewer “tourist spots” within the city center / Expensive day-pass rates for gyms

Usually, I book travel accommodation through Booking.com or Agoda.com. however, since I was staying for a full month as a digital nomad in Osaka, booking night-by-night wasn’t cost-effective. I inquired in Facebook groups and eventually connected with a guesthouse owner. Although the property is listed on Booking.com, they offered a significant discount for a monthly stay, bringing the price down to JPY 90,000 (approx. $580 USD). The unit was a one-bedroom apartment with a kitchenette and a washing machine, located just five minutes from the subway. I highly recommend it!

👉 This is the place I stayed at. You can check the photos and amenities on Booking.com. If you want to contact the landlord directly for a discounted rate, feel free to DM me on Instagram or Facebook (I cannot post private contact info here). The owner mentioned that even for shorter stays, contacting her directly is often cheaper than the platforms!

As mentioned above, the digital nomad Osaka experience has many advantages, especially the cost of living, which is much more affordable than in Tokyo or Kyoto. Besides work-friendly cafes, I visited two co-working spaces during my stay and was very satisfied. Below is a compiled list of the best spots for remote work in Osaka.

Public transport in Osaka is extremely convenient and can take you to almost any attraction. While the different JR and private railway lines might seem complex, an ICOCA card makes it simple. ICOCA is similar to Tokyo’s SUICA. Beyond transit, it can be used at convenience stores and chain restaurants. If you are an iPhone user, you can simply add the card to your Apple Wallet, tap your phone at gates, and top up via Apple Pay.
